Programme

EPISODE 1 | Non-ionising radiation cosmetic applications – types of treatments, potential risks and regulation in Australia

The use of non-ionising radiation (NIR) for cosmetic applications is increasing globally and in Australia, including the use of optical radiation such as lasers and intense pulsed light as well as newer devices using radiofrequency and ultrasound. There is a wide range of treatments performed, which include epilation, tattoo removal, body sculpting and removal of pigmented lesions. Exposure to the intense NIR energies that are required for efficacy of treatment to the targeted tissue carries a risk of injury, particularly from improperly performed treatments. Research on the health risks of cosmetic NIR applications is lacking, particularly on the extent of poor treatment application or misuse. In Australia, there is no national regulation for NIR cosmetic applications and only three states have established regulatory controls for certain optical cosmetic applications. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency has published national safety advice for optical NIR cosmetic treatments directed to both treatment providers and consumers.
